Frequently Asked Questions
Do you play requests?
I don't play requests during performances, but I will arrange a special tune for you if you give me enough notice. I also play themed music by prior arrangement.
How much space do you need?
Not very much. I need space for myself, a chair, a music stand and my amplifier. When necessary I use a small stand for the amplifier.
Can you write a tune for my wedding?
Of course, although I do charge a premium rate for this service. Included for you will be a handwritten and dedicated manuscript of the music. Tunes can also be named on request for surprise gifts etc. Please note that I always retain copyright of all of my compositions.
Does the venue have to provide anything?
A chair without arms and an electricity supply within 5 metres.
What kind of music do you play?
I play solo mandolin and guitar music which has been written or arranged for each instrument. I have a large repertoire including but not limited to classical styles, jazz, Italian, Folk, European, North & South American, Celtic, American Songbook and Romantic music. I also compose original music for both instruments.
How did you learn to play?
I taught myself with help from my father, who was a brilliant classical pianist.
Do you play at outdoor events?
Yes. However I can't play in the rain or in direct sunshine without a cover. I usually contact the venue or organiser in advance to discuss the details.
How loud is the music?
I use a small and powerful amplifier designed for acoustic instruments. This produces a mellow tone and is ideal for most size wedding venues including outdoor spaces. Normally I play at a background ambient volume, which I adjust on request. Very large venues (large ballrooms, cathedrals etc.) often require additional amplification, which is usually provided in-house. I will always liaise with such venues to make sure that everything is arranged in advance. Please be aware that some venues will make extra charges to provide their own amplification systems.
Do you sit or stand to play?
I prefer to play seated, partly because I use a small foot stool, and partly because it is much more comfortable for me. If you would like me to stand for any part of a performance, please let me know in advance.
Do you sing?
No. Sorry about that.
What type of instruments do you use?
I play a Paul Shippey A5 model mandolin, and a Yamaha NCX1200r classical guitar. Both are fitted with very high quality electronic pickup devices, which produce a warm natural tone when amplified.
Do you charge for travel expenses?
I make a small travel charge for wedding music performances outside of Devon and North Cornwall.
"Thanks again for the beautiful music at our wedding. Listening to the mandolin while I was walking down the aisle was so romantic and it was a great talking point after the service. We loved the choice of music too. You got it just right!"
